What are we learning?
Our topic is Antarctic Animals.
Using our pathfinder you will:

* Read the information found on websites, paying careful attention to meaning.
* Use the tools of effective readers and learners such as scanning and note-taking. Also, linking what you learn to your task.
* Use a variety of websites, with both words and graphics, to learn about Antarctic Animals.
* Ask your own questions allowing you to learn more as you read and view websites.
* Think carefully about the usefulness of the websites and how they have presented their information.
Glossary
These are some of the terms you will come across as you research.
Fauna - animals
Food Chain - the links between animals and the plants and other animals they feed upon. For example, small toothed whales eat penguins, penguins eat krill, krill eat phyto-plankton.
Gestational period - the length of time it takes an animal to grow before it is ready to be born.
Habitat - the environment (place) in which an animal lives.
Lactation - the way in which mammal babies are fed milk by their mothers.
Migrate - the act of travelling great distances to either find feeding grounds or breeding grounds.
Phyto - plankton - tiny one celled animals that live in the oceans of Antarctica. An important food source for krill.
Predator - any animal that eats another. For example a killer whale catches and eats Weddell seals. Therefore, the killer whale is the predator.

Boolify is a terrific, easy to use search engine. Try it for your research. Type in 'Antarctic Animals' first of all to see a good range of sites. You can add in other key words from there to narrow your search.
